Indo-Russian relations refer to the bilateral relations between the Republic of India and the Russian Federation. During the Cold War, India and the Soviet Union (USSR) enjoyed a strong strategic, military, economic and diplomatic relationship. After the collapse of the USSR, Russia inherited the close relationship with India.

Traditionally, the Indo-Russian strategic partnership has been built on five major components: politics, defence, civil nuclear energy, anti-terrorism co-operation and space. However, in recent years, a sixth component, economic, has grown in importance in both countries. Both countries entered into an Indo-Soviet Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation in August 1971.

In 1984, Soviet issued a stamp commemorating this treaty. Further in 1990 the Soviet Union and India released on a joint issue of stamps.

The design of the Indian stamp on Russian theme is based on the prize-winning painting of Sanjay Adhikari, VIII Std, Kalakendra, Chandernagore (An Elephant and Maharaja throne from India) while, the design of the Russian stamp on an Indian theme is based on the painting of Vorontsova Tanya of Kishnikov, Maldovia (Paintings on Red Square in Moscow).
