Sweden Introduces Smaller and Lighter Coins
2016-12-14 Wed
New smaller and lighter 1, 2 and 5-krona coins were issued by Sweden to replace the older ones on 3rd October. This was done to make cash management more efficient and environment-friendly. The new 2-krona coin will reduce the number of coins needed in circulation.Officials stated that most coins remain in piggy banks or other containers and remain unused. The retail trade would require more coins to avoid a shortage. The new smaller and lighter coins are handy to use than their older counterparts. The weight of the new 1-krona coin is half of the old 1-krona coin. This will reduce energy costs, transportation when delivering the coins to banks and shops etc.
The nickel-free coins are environment-friendly and also have milled edges to make identifying denominations easier for the visually-impaired.
Old coins will be invalid after 30th June 2017. You can use your coins for transactions or even deposit them before the last date.
