Uniface South Carolina 10-shilling note of 1778 honours the U.S. victory during the Revolutionary War battle of Fort Moultrie, in a tiny vignette featuring a palm tree. The fort was initially called Fort Sullivan and later named Fort Moultrie, after Gen. William Moultrie, who led the battle against the British Navy to defend Charleston. In July 1776, the British Navy retreated after burning one of their ships to prevent its capture. After this victory, the British could not occupy Charleston for almost four years.
Apart from the Fort Moultrie quarter dollar that was released recently, a colonial bill with the battle scene in the background in a vignette containing a palm tree was issued. Experts state that it is the only Colonial bill that commemorates an actual Revolutionary War battle.
