100 years of Latvia’s independence Celebrated with Innovative New Gold Coin
2016-11-11 Fri
On 10th November, Latvia issued a new gold coin celebrating the Baltic republic’s centenary of independence, which was declared on 18th November 1918, and officially recognized on 26th January 1921. The coin’s design replicates a 3rd- to 4th-century disc fibula, which is a pin for fastening garments.Produced by the Mint of Austria on behalf of the Bank of Latvia, the coin was designed by Latvian artists Ing?na Elere (graphic design) and Solvita Rulle (plaster model). The obverse design replicates an openwork specimen that was found in a Latvian graveyard. The reverse features the inscriptions #Latvija, #ripsakta, #3_4gs, 5 euro, and #2016. The hashtags reflect that the coin was issued in the modern era. The mintage limit of the 5 €uro .999 gold 3.10 g Proof coin is 7,000.
100 years of Latvia’s independence will begin from 2017 and go on until 2022. Several commemorative coins will be struck during this period. A special coin will also be struck to celebrate the Commemoration of the Bank of Latvia itself 1st November 2022.
