Muhammad bin Tughluq (725-752, AD 1325-1351) was the son of Ghiyas-ud-din Tughlaq of the Tughluq dynasty. He had issued various numbers of coins. His coinage is divided into different classes. Coins which was struck in the memory of his father, Coin with his own name; coins with his own name was struck both by normal and token issue, and the coins struck in the names of ‘Abbasid Caliphs’.Coins struck in his name were issued in gold, silver, copper, Billion. One such gold heavy dinar, Hazrat Delhi mint, which weighs around 12.82gm, was sold for INR 55.000 at Todywalla Auctions held in Mumbai on 23rd September 2016.
The obverse of the coin reads as “Al-Wathiq bi-tayid Al-rahman Muhammad shah al-sultan” written within the centre circle, mint name Hazrat Delhi and Date AH 727 (written in words) is written in margin within the outer circle. The reverse of the coin has the inscription”Ashhad an la illah illa allah wa ashhad an Muhammad abduhu wa rasuluhu” written within the double circle. This coin is a rare coin in Extremely Fine condition.
