Hong Kong Auction Fetched over $2 Million

The April 2016 Hong Kong sale of Chinese and Asian Coins, Currency and Medals, conducted by Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio, realised a whopping $2 million!In one hour, two Li Yuan Hung Dollars, L&M-43 and L&M-44 of the “with hat” varieties were sold at $20,315 and $26,290 respectively. Their sale value crossed double their estimates.
Two lots comprising of six different Pattern Junk Dollars, produced at mints in Rome, Osaka, London, Philadelphia and Vienna, featuring a different portrait of Sun Yat-sen each, with variations of the junk reverse, fetched over $200,000.
A very rare pattern 3 Mace 6-1/2 Candareens “reversed pattern” from Kwangtung, realized $52,580, crossing its estimate value by $15,000.
Apart from coins, medals were also sold at extremely high values. Amongst world coins, the 1935 Hong Kong 10 Cent piece hammered at $5,975. A 1999 Lunar Series 50,000 Tugriks fetched $8,365.
The star of the paper money session was a People’s Bank of China 10 Yuan, dated 1953 which realized a staggering $68,712.50, not just because of its rarity but also because of its fine grading.
The next Hong Kong Sale will be scheduled in August 2016.
