On 19th February 1942, Australia faced its first and the largest attack by a foreign power. Japanese bombers, dive-bombers and fighters destroyed the town and harbour of Darwin. The first attack lasted for 40 minutes which was followed by the second one on the RAAF airfield at Parap.

In 1944, Charles Woolf served in the crash boats in Darwin. To his shock, there were many Japanese troops existing, out of which one attempted to raid, but were turned back by the Spitfires. These raids killed at least 243 people and wounded more than 300. In 1942, Darwin was bombed 64 times, destroying military and civil infrastructure completely.
