Sale of 2016 Gold Mercury Dime to Start on 21st April
2016-04-11 Mon
The U.S. Mint released information about the launch of the 2016 Mercury Dime Centennial Gold Coin. The sale of the coin is scheduled on 21st April.125,000 of these 0.9999-fine, 24-karat gold coins containing one-tenth of an ounce of precious metal will be sold for $150 apiece. The coin is offered in a matte finish considering the original design. The coins are being struck at the West Point Mint and will bear “W” mintmarks located on the reverse to the right of the “E” in “ONE,” replicating the original location of the mintmark on Mercury dimes of yore.
Measuring measures 17.9 millimeters in width, the obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s original 1916 Mercury dime motif and his monogram behind the nape of Liberty’s neck.
The Mint attempted to reduce the impact of the legally-mandated “AU 24K” and “1/10 OZ.” gold markings on the coin, and placed them in small print below ‘E PLURIBUS UNUM’ on the reverse.
The U. S. Mint might release a three-coin proof set late this year in time for holiday shopping, or will release other variations of the three coins before the year is over.
