Today, on 4th December 1796 Bajirao Ballal (Balaji) Bhat commonly known as Bajirao I acquired the title of Peshwa of Maratha Riyasat. After the death of Balaji Vishwanath – the first Peshwa, Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj appointed Bajirao – I as Peshwa. This event turned the course of history. His reign became the initial steps for the far reaching influence of Maratha power.To acknowledge the contribution of Shrimant Bajirao Peshwa India Post issued a commemorative stamp of Bajirao Peshwa in 2004 of Rs 5 denomination.
