The first Day of the Month Chaitra marks The New Year of Hindu Calendar. This day is celebrated worldwide by all Hindu communities. Being a culturally diverse country, the festival is celebrated differently by different communities.The sun enters in Mesh Rashi (Aries Sign) which is the first sign of the zodiac. That is where the New Year begins. Historically speaking, the day commemorates the commencement of the Shaka calendar. Besides, the Pauranic Tradition believes that this is the day on which Brahma created the world.
The Festival is known as Gudhi Padva in Maharashtra, Samvatsar Padvo among the Konkanis of Goa and Kerala, Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh and Navreh amongst Kashmiri Pandits. The Day is also termed as Yugadi as a brand new year begins.
