Iconic Vespa Scooter on Italian Coins

Italy has released a new 5 euro silver coin to celebrate one of the most iconic and stylish scooter-brands in the world, Vespa. Designed by artist-engraver Maria Carmela Colaneri and struck at the Mint of Rome, the coins belong to the Italian Excellence series.The obverse side depicts a couple sitting on a modern Vespa scooter. Three different versions of the coin are available and the scooter’s colour is different in each version. The scooter is featured in three different colours, green, white and red, just like the colours of Italian Flag. The Colosseum is shown in the background while other inscriptions on the obverse include, “ITALIAN REPUBLIC” and designer’s name “COLANERI”.
The reverse side features a graphic representation of Vespa’s very first model that was introduced in 1946 with Piaggio elements. Other inscriptions on the reverse include “5 EURO”, VESPA logo, “R” for Mint of Rome; and “2019”.
Fior di Conio finish is applied on the coins. The version featuring a green scooter has a mintage limit of 3,000 pieces, while versions featuring a white and red scooter have a mintage limit of 7,000 pieces each. 1000 sets with all three coins are also available.
