150 Years of Allahabad High Court Celebrated with Coin Release

On March 13th 2016, new commemorative coins were issued to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Allahabad High Court. The President, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee released Rupees 150 and Rupees 5 coins at Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh.Established on 11th July 1866 under the High Courts Act of 1861, the Allahabad High Court is the 3rd oldest High court in India. The High Court of Judicature for the North-Western Provinces came into existence at Agra under Letters Patent of the 17th March, 1866, replacing the old Sudder Diwanny Adawlat. The seat of the High Court for the North-Western Provinces was shifted from Agra to Allahabad in 1869 and its designation was altered to ‘the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad’ by a supplementary Letters patent issued on March 11, 1919.
The High Court in Allahabad and the Chief Court of Oudh, were exercising the powers of the High Courts over their respective territories of Oudh and Agra. After Independence, the U.P. High Court Amalgamation Order, 1948 was issued and the Chief Court of Oudh was amalgamated with the High Court of Allahabad. On the 26th January, 1950, the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad came to have jurisdiction throughout the state of Uttar Pradesh.
