Citizens to Design 5 Canadian Coins for 2017

Canadian citizens were pleasantly surprised when they got to know that they are being given a chance to design the nation’s five circulation coins to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017. The Mint will strike new designs on the 5-cent, 10-cent, 25-cent, one-dollar and two-dollar coins. Citizens could to participate in ‘My Canada, My Inspiration" contest by submitting their designs. The Mint was looking for unique designs for the reverse.The themes for the designs were: Canada’s beauty, nature, monuments; values or principles which define Canadian identity; discoveries, exploration, victories; culture, sports, pastimes; and Canada’s future.
The submission deadline was30th April 2015. The Royal Canadian Mint and a panel of notable Canadians decided the finalists in each themed category. Winning designs were selected through public voting in September 2015. The winners will be announced by mid-2017. Winners will also attend the unveiling ceremony in 2017 and would receive $2,000 in cash.
