On 26th September, Latvia released a circulating commemorative €2 coin dedicated to the Zemgale region. It’s the last release in Latvia’s multiyear, multi-coin cultural and historical region series that marks Latvia’s 100th anniversary.Zemgale’s coat of arms shows a silver elk on a blue background. The obverse of the latest coin features the same coat of arms without the coloured background. The common map design is depicted on the reverse. 500,000 such coins have been released out of which 7,000 are struck in Brilliant Uncirculated finish. The coins are available for sale in different packaging options.
€2 coins featuring the coat of arms of Vidzeme and the coats of arms of Kurzeme and Latgale were issued in 2016 and 2017 respectively. The Constitution of the Republic of Latvia was laid down by four cultural and historical regions. These regions adopted their coats of arms on 26th April 1930 which are closely associated with the historical developments in Latvia. These coats of arms were considered as national symbols legally in 2012.
