Rare Penny Red Auctioned for £495,000

UK’s second most valuable stamp is sold for £495,000. An incredibly rare Penny Red Stamp of plate 77 was bought by an anonymous collector at Stanley Gibbons Auctions, held on 14th March 2016 at London.Penny Red Stamps are the world’s second most valuable stamps. Among which the Plate 77 is considered to be the rarest and most persuaded philatelic item.
Plate 77 Penny Red stamps were printed in the year of 1863. However, they never sold by post offices after they were not considered to be of good enough quality.
Though the printing plate was destroyed, few stamps went into circulation. Hence, they are highly priced as only five such examples are known.
This one was sold for £495,000..!
The Stamp depicts the portrait of the Queen. Number 77 is clearly seen on her either side.
