To mark the 100th birth anniversary and the 20th death anniversary of the politician, François Mitterrand, France is going to issue a special 2 euro commemorative coin. The obverse depicts a profile of Francois Mitterrand in deep thought. It also features his personal emblem comprising of a half-oak and half-olive tree, symbolizing strength and peace. Other inscriptions include his name, the date of his birth and its centenary in 2016. Francois Mitterrand (1916-1996) began his political career during the Fourth Republic in France. He joined the Socialist Party and unified the left-wing opposition with the «Programme commun» (Common Programme). He was elected as the President in 1981 and re-elected in 1988.
