Maithili Sharan Gupt, one of the most influential poets in modern Hindi was born today, August 3 1988.
He is considered among the pioneers of Khari Boli (plain dialect) poetry and wrote in Khari Boli at a time when most Hindi poets favoured the use of Brajbhasha.
Gupt entered the world of Hindi literature by writing poems in various magazines, including Saraswati. In 1910, his first major work, Rang Mein Bhang was published by Indian Press.
His major work includes Saket, Yashodhara, Bharat Bharati, Jayadrath Vadh, Vikat Bhat, Gurukul, and Kisan.
He was a recipient of the third highest (then second highest) Indian civilian honour of Padma Bhushan in the year 1954.To tribute him India post has issued commemorative postage stamp in 1974.
