Thiruvalluvar is also known as Valluvar, he was a great Tamil poet and Philosopher saint believed to have lived between 3rd to 1st Century BC. Very little is known about the life of Thiruvalluvar, it is believed that he was born in a village Thiru Mylai (Mylapore) Chennai in Tamil Nadu or in Thirunayanar Kuruchi, a village in Kanyakumari District of Tamil Nadu.Thrivalluvar has contributed a lot in Tamil literature, ‘Thirukkular’ is a book based on collection of ethics, politics, economics and love. This text is considered to be as one of the finest work of Tamil literature. Thirukkular consist of 1330 Couplets or Kurals. This book is also called as Fifth Veda or Bible of Tamil Land.
A poet from the Sangam period, Mamulanar has mentioned that Thiruvalluvar was a great Tamil scholar and poet.
This 2 rupee coin issued by Indian Government depicts Thiruvalluvar on the reverse. The obverse of this coin depicts Ashokan Lion Pedestal, with the denomination below and the lettering ‘Bharat Rupaye’ written in devnagari, and Indian Rupee written in Roman.
The reverse of the coin has the image of Saint ‘Thiruvalluvar’ seated on low stool in a writing position with date 1995 below lettering ‘8TH WORLD TAMIL CONFERENCE SAINT THIRUVALLUVAR” in English and “8 Wi Viswa Tamil Sammelan saint Thiruvalluvar” in Hindi.
