Curacao and St. Maarten Might Soon Introduce New Banknotes
2018-06-18 Mon
The Minister of Finance of Sint Maarten had earlier stated that the bank would issue a limited number of banknotes for Curaçao and Sint Maarten. Members of the media had questioned the Centrale Bank van Curacao en Sint Maarten (CBCS) regarding this statement.Banknotes and coins are produced and circulated legally in Curaçao and Sint Maarten by CBCS only. When Netherlands Antilles was about to be dissolved on 10th October 2010, the CBCS had made necessary arrangements to introduce a new currency for the monetary union of Curacao and Sint Maarten - the Caribbean guilder.
The governments of Curacao and Sint Maarten are currently discussing this idea with CBCS. The current Netherlands Antillean guilder banknotes will remain legal tender until a final decision is taken. However, the institution has assured that there would be a sufficient supply of banknotes to meet the demands.
