2018-03-10 Sat
An Undated (1808) Classic Head cent, struck 30 percent off centre, graded AU-55 was sold for $6,462.50 by Ira and Larry Goldberg Auctioneers from 18th to 21st February during the Pre-Long Beach Auction in Los Angeles.U.S. large cents come in different varieties due to die pairings of the obverse and reverse dies. Variations can also be found due to die states within those dies. The offered undated Classic Head cent was struck 30 percent off centre and dated to 1808.
The coin is a part of an early-to-middle die state of the S-277 variety. It has a die crack through the D in UNITED on the reverse with clash marks on both sides. These coins were struck between 1808 and 1814. Experts believe that the offered example was one of the best U.S. Mint error on a Classic Head cent.
