Meaning of the word Dawar Bakhsh is ‘God Given’. He was the grandson of Jahangir and the eldest son of Khusuru. Dawar Bakhsh was the ruler of Mughal Empire. He sat on the Mughal throne immediately after the death of his grandfather Jahangir. He ruled the Mughal Empire in the year 1627 CE for a short period of 3 months.He was made as the Diwan of Dakhin, later he was also made as Governor of Gujarat by his grandfather. He also became a puppet in the political game to seize the Mughal throne.
After the death of Jahangir, Asaf Khan declares Dawar Bakhsh as the next king of Mughal Empire, while Nur Jahan wanted Shahriyar, Jahangir’s youngest son to be the next emperor. In the year 1627 CE Shah Jahan in the conflict killed both Dawar Bakhah and Shahriyar and sat on the Mughal throne.
This silver rupee was issued by him from the mint Lahore, in the Hijri Year 1037 during the first year of his reign. The obverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Abu al-Muzaffar Dawar Bakhsh Badshah, Sanah Ahad’. The reverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘La Ilaha Illa Allahu Muhammad-ur-Rasullullah’, with AH date 1037 and mint-name Lahore. This extremely rare Silver rupee was sold for INR 20,00,000 by Classical Numismatic Gallery in an auction held on 15th December 2017.
