Finland Celebrates its Sauna Culture through Coinage

Finland is home to almost 3 million saunas and they have always been an important part of Finnish culture. The Mint of Finland released a special circulating commemorating €2 coin to celebrate saunas. The obverse features smoke coming from a sauna with a lake, trees, and steam from two other saunas in the background. Tourists come here to enjoy a trek to a pool and then take a dip in the ice-cold water. A total of 1 million coins would be released.The coin’s outer copper-aluminum-nickel ring features 12 stars of the European flag. The core is made of copper-nickel composite. The reverse of this 8.5 grams ringed-bimetallic coin shows a map of the European Union.
