Pobjoy Mint Pays Tribute to Queen Elizabeth II with Sapphire Coronation

The reverse showcases the Lion and the Unicorn, which symbolize the United Kingdom and the Royal Family. Prince Charles received a hand-painted invitation to his mother’s Sapphire Coronation that featured these beautiful animals. The design features a lion seated behind a unicorn with an English rose, a Scottish thistle, a Welsh daffodil and a Northern Irish shamrock. The wording “1953 – H.M Queen Elizabeth II – 2018” appears in the surround.The Sapphire Coronation obverse features the Pobjoy Mint exclusive effigy design of HM Queen Elizabeth II in exceptional detail. In order to maintain the exclusivity of this coin, they are producing just 750 1/25oz Fine 999. gold coins, 2,000 Proof sterling silver coins and 10,000 in cupro-nickel. The denomination of the gold coin is £4 and the silver and cupro-nickel have a face value of £2.
Signifying the United Kingdom are the Lion and the Unicorn. The Lion represents England and the Unicorn represents Scotland. The combination of the two animals dates back to the accession of James I of England in 1603, who was also James VI of Scotland. Over the last 400 years these animals have become strongly associated with Royalty and therefore Queen, Elizabeth II was finalized.
On 6th February 1952, Queen Elizabeth II took to the throne when she was just 25, after the death of her father King George VI. The Coronation took place more than a year later due to the tradition that holding such a festival is inappropriate during the period of mourning following the death of a monarch.
It was the first major event that was broadcasted on television. It was viewed by 27 million and 36 million British population. In the ceremony itself, at Westminster Abbey, Elizabeth swore an oath to uphold the law and govern the Church of England.
Queen Elizabeth II became the longest-reigning monarch in 2015 when she overtook her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria. The recent death of Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej means that Queen Elizabeth II of Britain and the Commonwealth Realms has now become the world’s longest-reigning living monarch.

The color associated with this anniversary is blue – symbolic of trust and peace, loyalty and , all characteristics you would hope to find in a Sovereign.
