2019 Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Coin Design Selected
2018-01-22 Mon
The CCAC recommended one of the 13 new designs that were submitted for Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Island on 16th January. No recommendations were made from the designs that were earlier submitted for the 2019 American Memorial Park quarter dollars. The selected design was one of four designs that were liked by officials from American Memorial Park at Garapan, Saipan. The design features a young Chamorro woman in a traditional dress walking towards the flag circle with flowers. Her left hand is placed on a plaque which honours those who died in the liberation of Saipan. Most of the designs that were rejected had a military theme with technical problems. Experts believed that they featured a sharp rendering of the flag poles which would be difficult to achieve on the small quarter dollar coin with a low relief.
The Chamorro belong to Mariana Islands. They are politically split between United States territory of Guam and the United States Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in Micronesia. They originally belong to an Austronesian ethnic group from the eastern Caroline Islands who later migrated to the Northern Marianas.
