Remembering Mirza Ghalib

The legendary ghazal composer and last great poet of the Mughal Empire, Ghalib passed away on 15Th February 1869.

Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan, born on 27th December 1797 was an eminent Indian Urdu and Persian language poet during the last years of the Mughal Empire. He used his pen-names of Ghalib and Asad.

Ghalib is considered to be the last great poet of the Mughal Era and one of the most popular and influential poets of the Urdu language. He started composing poetry at the age of 11 and during his lifetime he wrote many ghazals.

In 1850, Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar II bestowed upon Mirza Ghalib the title of "Dabir-ul-Mulk". The Emperor also added to it the additional title of "Najm-ud-daula". He was also appointed by the Emperor as the royal historian of Mughal Court.

Ghalib is honoured on the India Post commemorative stamps of 1952 and 1969 of 4.5 Anna and 20 Paise respectively. The stamp issued in 1969 of 20 Paise is a commemorative stamp issued in memory of Ghalib on the centenary of his death.

Pakistan Post has also issued a set of two commemorative stamps of value Paisa 15 and 50 on the centenary of Ghalib’s death anniversary. The stamps bore the typical portrait of Mirza Ghalib on the right enriched with Mughal floral border and a selection of verses from his poetical masterpiece.
