US 2017 American Liberty 225th Anniversary Gold Coin

The US Mint celebrated its 225th anniversary with the release of 2017 American Liberty Proof Gold $100 Coin. It belongs to a series of coins that showcase a modern take on Lady Liberty. Liberty is depicted as an African-American woman for the first time. In 2015, the first coin in the series was released, a silver medal was released in 2016 and the 2017 version was released on 6th April. A Proof finish silver medal and a four-medal set was also issued this year.The obverse design features the initials of the artist Justin Kunz “JK”. Liberty has braided hair, tied back in a bun and crowned by a diadem of four large stars. The diadem’s design is inspired by Statue of Freedom on Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. Mint sculptor-engraver Phebe Hemphill’s initial “PH” is also featured. Other inscriptions include the years 1792 - 2017, LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. The Reverse features an American bald eagle. Initials of artist Chris Costello and Mint sculptor Michael Gaudioso are also featured. Other inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 100 DOLLARS, the “W” mintmark and 1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD. The edge features the legend * 225th ANNIVERSARY repeated three times around the coin in raised lettering.
