Remembering our Brave Soldiers on Infantry Day

27th October is celebrated as Infantry Day by Indian Army. It was on this day (27th Oct 1947), Company of Infantry Men of 1st Sikh Battalion where airlifted to Srinagar. This course took place to chase away the Pakistani invaders and to resolutely defend Kashmir from falling into enemies hands.The action was ordered by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru after the ruler of Jammu and Kashmir, Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession acceding Jammu Kashmir to India.
Infantry Day was celebrated with traditional fervour with wreath-laying ceremony organised at 'Amar Jawan Jyoti' at India Gate.
The Indian Infantry is one of the most battle-hardened and combat rich force in the world. Charged with the glorious history of warfare over a couple of decades, this Infantry proudly continues to perform the primary and vital role in managing the security environment of the country.
To commemorate the Infantry Day and to pay befitting salutation to our soldiers who have made the supreme sacrifice in the past. India Post has issued a 500 paisa (5 Rupees) commemorative stamp in 2006.
