New Cyprus Coins Celebrate Paphos as European Capital of Culture for 2017

Cyprus will be releasing a circulating 2017 commemorative €2 coin on 3rd November to celebrate the town of Paphos which has been named the European Capital of Culture for 2017. The title rotates among EU-member nations and all other cities have also been honoured on special coins.The obverse features an amphitheatre named Paphos Ancient Odeon dating back to the 2nd century A.D. The site was used as a venue for cultural events during ancient times. The venue currently hosts musical and theatrical performances.
The obverse also features the country’s name along with a roman phrase which translates to Paphos 2017 — European Capital of Culture. The weight of €2 ringed-bimetallic coin with a copper-nickel core and copper-aluminum-nickel ring is 8.5 grams. The coin’s outer ring on both sides features 12 stars of the European flag. The common reverse features a map of the European Union. Mintage is limited to 430,000 pieces, out of which 418,000 are available in 25-count rolls. 5,000 Proof and 7,000 Brilliant Uncirculated examples are also available.
