Queen of Tejano Music- Selena Quintanilla

We all love music and it is something that we can connect to. Everyone has their favourite artist and few legendary ones were born to rock the world but their lives are full of mystery.

Selena Quintanilla, a multi-talented personality, was a singer, songwriter, model, actress, spokesperson and fashion designer. She was born on 16th April 1971 and at the age of six; she started singing on the streets because of her poor conditions. Later at 10, she started singing for the events and weddings which gave her some recognition in the world of music.

Selena became very popular for Tejano music. On 17th October 1989, her first studio album was released. She won two awards "Best Female Vocalist of the Year" and "Performer of the Year." Her album Ven Conmigo was the first Tejano record to achieve the gold record status and it sold more than 500,000 copies. Billboard magazine named her in the top-selling Latin artist of the 1990s decade. She also ranks among the most influential Latin artists of all-time.

Selena was admired and popularized from her voice to her dressing; she was judged and became a well-known entertainer of her era. She was also a designer and in 1994 she opened her first boutique by her name ‘Selena Etc’. The Hispanic Business magazine claims that she earned over five million dollars from these new boutiques. She also had collaboration with MAC cosmetics and became the best selling product in the cosmetic industry. She was seen as a role model by many youngsters.

At the age of 23, Selena died a mysterious death which is alleged to have been a planned murdered by her manager, Yolanda Saldivar. Selena's first English-language album, Dreaming of You, was released after her death and became a huge hit.

Selena's music remains popular even today. A film named ‘Selena’ was made in 1997 in which Jennifer Lopez portrayed the Tejano superstar.

US postage issued a commemorative Forever Stamp to honour the Entertainment Giants and Selena Quintanilla became a forever face on these Stamps.
