2017-10-11 Wed

Dix Noonan Webb’s paper money auction in London made a total sale of £339,534 or $456,568 on 25th September. British Commonwealth material fared well at the auction and some of them fetched more than their estimates.

A major highlight was a perforated Malaya & British Borneo Board of Commissioners of Currency $100 specimen note of March 21, 1953, graded Extremely Fine which carried an estimated value of £1,500 to £2,000 and was sold for £13,200. A perforated Mauritius 1,000-rupee note, 1954 to 1967, graded Extremely Fine crossed its estimated value of £4,000 to £5,000 and was sold for a staggering £10,200.

A 10-shilling and £1 note signed by C.P. Mahon with same serial numbers in their original parchment envelope was sold for £7,800. The Bank of England issued its first 10-shilling and £1 notes in November 1928. The first 125 examples of both these issues were given to important personalities. The offered pair of notes was given to the first Lord Kindersley, who was a director of the Bank of England from 1914 to 1946. A collection of 78 Irish 10-shilling notes had a 100 percent sell-through rate and was sold for a total of £30,816.
