Tughluq dynasty ruled Delhi from 1320 AD till 1414 AD. They were the Muslim dynasty of Turko-Indian origin who ruled India in the medieval times. Their rule started in 1320 AD when Ghazi Malik assumed the throne under the title Ghiyath Al-Din Tughluq. Ghiyath Al-Din Tughluq’s son Muhammad Bin Tughluq sat on the throne in the year 1325 AD and ruled it till 1351 AD.

Muhammad Bin Tughluq's coins were the most complex and innovative specimens of the whole Delhi series. He issued coins in large quantities from a number of mints which reflects the extent of his conquests. His coinage is divided into different classes.

1. Coins which were struck in the memory of his father
2. Coins with his own name;
3. Coins with his own name struck both by normal and token issues, and
4. Coins struck in the names of ‘Abbasid Caliphs’.

This gold heavy dinar which was struck by him in his own name weighs around 6.3g and was listed for INR 3, 50,000 to 4, 00,000 at Todywalla Auction. Both, the mint name and the date is not inscribed on the coin. The obverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Muhammd Bin Tughluq Shah’ and the reverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Muhyi Sunan Khatim-al-Nabiyyin’ meaning ‘Reviver of the Laws of the seal of Prophets’.
