Highlights at the October 26-28 H.R. Harmer Auction

2017-10-10 Tue

United States, British Commonwealth, worldwide stamps, covers, collections, items from Spanish Philippines and U.S. territories and possessions will be offered by H.R. Harmer auction from 26th to 28th October at the Hilton Costa Mesa, 3050 Bristol St., Costa Mesa, Calif.

An interesting 1964 error stamp from the Falkland Islands will also be offered. It belongs to a set of four engraved bicolours. They feature Queen Elizabeth II at upper right and a different black vignette for each of the four denominations. The 6-penny blue-black stamp generally features HMS Kent. The offered error stamp though, features HMS Glasgow, which generally is black on the 2½d stamp from the same set.

Experts believe that one sheet of 60 stamps had the wrong vignette and only 17 to 25 examples of the error stamps exist today. The offered stamp has an estimated market value of $32,500. The pricing is mentioned in italics which means that the stamp cannot be valued accurately. The fresh never hinged and “choice very fine” example is offered with a starting bid of $20,000.

Another highlight is a full set of the six Pan-American Exposition commemoratives arranged on a first-day registered mail cover, addressed to Finland and postmarked May 1, 1901. Only 15 such covers with the complete set of stamps exist. The offered cover is the only one to be addressed to Finland and was very recently discovered in Europe. The cover like this one has a market value of $30,000 and the offered item has a starting bid of $15,000.
