Shah Jahan's Gold Mohur Sold For INR 3, 75,000

2017-10-04 Wed

We all know that Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan sat on the throne in the Hijri year 1037 (1628 AD). But there is a gold mohur issued by him during the 9th year of his reign with an error date 1036.

The gold Mohur shown in the adjoining image was issued by Shah Jahan during the 9th year of his reign and it weighs around 10.9 grams. The date on the coin is inscribed as 1036, which is one year before the date of his coronation. This is an error date; the date on the coin is inscribed wrongly as 1036 instead of 1046. AH date 1046 is corresponding to his RY 9.

The obverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Shah Jahan Badshah Ghazi’ within the square while other name and title with mint name ‘Lahore’ and RY 9 written in the margin. The reverse of the coin is inscribed with "Kalima" within the square while the name, four caliphs with AH date 1036 written in the margin.

This very rare gold mohur was sold for INR 3,75,000 at Todywalla Auction held in Mumbai on 3rd February 2016.
