2017-10-04 Wed

Bank of China will be releasing commemorative banknotes on Thursday to commemorate the bank’s 100th anniversary. Five million banknotes with a face value of HK$100 will be circulated as per reports. The special-edition banknotes will be packaged as a single note and sold for HK$288. Three-in-one uncut notes will be sold for HK$988 while 30-in-one uncut notes will be sold for HK$13,888. 388 charity sets will be up for a public bidding, the profits of which will be donated to a local charity after deducting costs.

18+ citizens with a valid Hong Kong ID can register for the new notes through the official BOC website or at its branches between 28th September and 18th October.

Ordering is limited to five single notes, one set of the three-in-one uncut notes and 30-in-one uncut notes, per person. Lucky winners will be selected and announced on 1st November if the demand is more than supply.

Single notes will be available at 100 different branches to avoid chaos. Uncut notes will be available at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre or the Kowloon Bay International Trade and Exhibition Centre.

Officials state that the sale would be slower as many other commemorative banknotes are already on offer. Chances of speculation would be lower as the supply is high enough.

HSBC’s 150th anniversary and 2012 commemorative banknotes have a market value of HK$400. The price could become less than selling price - HK$380 if the serial number is not auspicious.
