All the great Indian personalities devote their lives to do something for their motherland! Although, among them, only a very few are remembered forever. So let’s see one of the personalities today who is merely forgotten.

Born on 4th October 1857, Shyamji Krishna Varma was a great revolutionary, journalist, nationalist and lawyer. In his childhood, he was a bright student and was very well versed in Sanskrit. He was a great disciple of Swami Dayanand Saraswati and became the first President of Bombay Arya Samaj. He was also the first non-Brahmin who received the prestigious title of ‘Pandit’.

Krishna Varma established Indian Home Rule Society in Feb 1905 to voice out the opinion against the Britishers in India. He raised a strong protest by publishing pamphlets, writings books and delivering speeches. ‘India House’ was established in London to help Indians visiting England.

Shyamji Krishna should have a special place in Indian history as he laid the foundation to free India from the chains of Britishers even before Mahatma Gandhi. Though Shyamji Krishna could not witness independent India, he became the spirit of inspiration among the young sons and daughters of India of that time.

Today is the 160th birth anniversary of Shyamji Krishna and we will remember him in the history of the freedom movement of Bharat! To honor this revolutionary personality, India Post issued a commemorative stamp of 60 Paisa, depicting Shyamji Krishna Varma.

We should admire and never forget these unsung heroes of India!
