We are back with another Gupta marvel! As discussed last time, we saw the Lyrist Type coin of Samudragupta and today again we are going to see his other masterpiece.

Samudragupta adopted the policy of ‘Digvijaya’ and ‘Dharma Vijaya’ after conquering many territories in North and South India. In order to show his imperial authority over other kingdoms, Samudragupta performed Ashvamedha sacrifice. Ashvamedha was an important ritual of Vedic religion. To commemorate his sacrificial ceremony, Samudragupta issued Ashvamedha type of coins. They are known for their beauty in gold! The execution and metallurgy of this coin are exceptional and is known worldwide! Isn't this gold coin amazing?

The obverse of it depicts the sacrificial horse facing left tied to a yupa or post. Brahmi letter ‘Si’ between the horse’s leg and legend ‘Rajadhiraja prithivima (vitva divam jayatyahruta vajimedha)’ around. The reverse portrays a standing queen facing left, holding a chauri and Brahmi legend ‘Asvamedha Parakramah’. This gold Dinar was sold for INR 4,40,000 in Todywalla Auctions.
