Shah Jahan's Gold Mohur Sold for INR 2,90,000

This gold Mohur was issued at Shahjahanabad mint during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan. The weight of this coin is around 10.9g and it was sold for INR 2, 90,000 at Todywalla Auction.

Shah Jahan was the 5th Mughal Emperor of India. He ruled from 1628 to 1658 CE. Born as a prince Khurram, he was the son of Emperor Jahangir and the Hindu Rajput wife Taj Bibi Bilqis Makani (Jagat Gosaini). The period of his reign was considered as the golden age of Mughal architecture. Shah Jahan built many monuments; the best known is Taj Mahal of Agra, built for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.

This gold Mohur was issued during the 27th year of emperor Shah Jahan’s reign. The obverse of the coin depicts the name, title of the king within the circle with mint name ‘Shahjanabad’ and RY 27 written in the margin. The reverse of the coin is inscribed with 'Kalima' inside the circle.
