Highlights of the October 2017 World Collectors Choice Online Auction

2017-10-03 Tue

Stack’s Bowers Galleries will be organising the October 2017 Collector’s Choice Online Auction of World and Ancient coins as well as World Currency on 4th October. The World Currency section offers exciting French material like a Specimen Proof featuring an original 50 Francs design created by Luc Olivier Merson, with allegorical angels. This note has no serial numbers, dates, signatures, or watermarks. The centring on this scarce piece is amazing yet the note is conservatively graded.

Ancient coins from Celtic, Sicilian, Macedon, Thrace, Athens, Ionia, Syria, Rome and Byzantine will be offered. An Athenian “New Style” AR Tetradrachm is one of the highlights. Other interesting world coins offered belong to France, Germany, Great Britain, Philippines, Russia, Spanish Colonial coinage and a Mexican grouping.

Another highlight is Spanish “Cantonal Revolution” 5 Pesetas. The revolution began in July 1873 in the southeast region of Cartagena. Government forces took over the city and the revolution ended after six months in January 1874. The revolutionary government demanded silver from the local people and minted coins when they took over the city.
