Sassi of Matera from Paleolithic Age Comes Back to Life on Italian Coins

A new 10 Euro silver proof coin called the Sassi of Matera, Basilicata from the Italy of Arts Series was released by Italy on 18th September. Matera is one of the oldest cities in the world which is known for unique architecture and rocky landscape. It has natural rock caves that have signs of human settlements from Paleolithic Age. The site is named in the World Heritage List of UNESCO in 1993.

The obverse features the Church of Santa Maria de Idris situated on the upper part of rocky Montirone, around San Pietro Caveoso. Other inscriptions include “REPUBBLICA ITALIANA”; and the last name of designer Maria Angela Cassol.

The reverse features a fresco in the rock-church of Santa Lucia alle Malve; “R” for Mint of Rome, “2017” and “10 EURO”. Other inscriptions include “ITALIA DELLE ARTI” and “MATERA” in exergue.

The 10 euro .925 Silver 22.00 g Proof coin has an Interrupted Milled edge and a mintage limit of 4,000. The coin can be purchased for € 50.98 VAT excl.
