Classic Voyageur Design Revived on Latest Canadian Coins

2017-10-03 Tue

The latest 1-ounce silver bullion coin released by the Royal Canadian Mint depicts a Voyageur dollar design that appeared on a silver dollar in 1935. The .9999 fine silver $5 coin celebrates the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation.

The design features a French Canadian fur trapper in a canoe. The original 1935 coin honoured King George V’s 25th anniversary. Sculptor and artist Emanuel Hahn created the designs to signify Canada’s reputation as the leaders of fur trade during that era.

The reverse features a canoe moving quickly around pines of a semi-circular island. A voyageur is sailing behind, a First Nations member manoeuvres the bow, a consignment of furs is marked “HB” indicating Hudson’s Bay Company in the middle and vertical rays in the sky represent the beautiful aurora borealis. A micro-engraved security maple leaf featuring “17” in the center of the leaf is depicted on the reverse as well.

The obverse features Susanna Blunt’s Queen Elizabeth II portrait, the $5 face value and 2017. The mintage limit is set as 250,000 pieces. Single coins come in protective plastic, apart from which, rolls with 25 coins, and “monster boxes” with 20 rolls are also available.
