Asses of Roman Republic

In a previous article, we discussed how the gold denomination was started in the Roman Republic. In this article, we will discuss its continuation during the wartime. The gold currency that was minted during the second Punic War continued till the later stage. In 211 BC they introduced denomination like 60, 40 and 20 Asses. These gold coins consist such a good illustration that it could be fitting as a present/gift piece. These coins depict the bust of Mars, God of War and defender of Rome, who in myth was the father of Romulus (Founder of Rome). The eagle on the reverse symbolized the Roman legion’s strength and immorality.
There is a lot of debate on its issued year, A.R.Meadows convincingly argue that the influx of gold after the decision of 216 BC most likely came from the Ptolemaic Kingdom in response to a direct appeal for help due to the Second Punic War. The similarity to the Ptolemaic coinage was tacit to the acknowledgement of the financial aid that was received by Rome.
