NGC Special Label for Latest US Palladium Coins

2017-09-25 Mon

A special label will be offered for the new Palladium American Eagle coins by NGC. The first ever Palladium coins by the US Mint will be released on 25th September 2017. Sierra Leone started minting palladium coins in 1966. China, Russia and Canada have also released such coins after that.

Palladium is a rare silvery-white metal that was discovered in the 1800s. It is mainly used as catalytic converters of automobiles; in jewellery and to create “white gold”. The new coins will have a face value of $25 and will be made of one troy ounce of .9995 fine palladium. Palladium has a market value of $900 an ounce currently.

The coin will feature two high-relief designs by the famous American sculptor Adolph Weinman. His works in the 20th century are popular even today. He created the Mercury Dime (1916-1945) reverse design and the Walking Liberty Half Dollar (1916-1947) obverse design.

The Palladium Eagle’s obverse design would be the same as the obverse of Mercury Dime featuring Liberty in a Phrygian cap. The reverse design of the new coin would be similar to reverse of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) gold medal. The medal was first issued in 1907 for personalities like Frank Lloyd Wright and I.M. Pei. It features an eagle holding a branch in its beak.

NGC’s special certification label will feature the coin’s eagle design and mention the importance of palladium composition.
