An MS-64 (NGC) 1797 Draped Bust dime of the JR-2, 13 Stars variety is being offered by Stack’s Bowers at October 2017 Collector’s Choice Online Auction. JR-2 is rarer of the two 1797 dime varieties. The fields are smooth and shiny while the design elements have a frosty texture. Liberty’s profile, the date and legend feature doubling. The coin is well-preserved with only small ticks here and there. There is an arcing to the right of the date to make for a pedigree marker. Only five Mint State coins of this type exist.
The same example was sold by Pogue in May 2015 sale for $176,250. The offered coin has been seen in a public auction two times in the last 50 years. It was sold at Abe Kosoff’s ANA Auction of August 1968 for $1,704.35.
