Queen Elizabeth II’s Sapphire Jubilee Celebrated on New Coins

A new coin issued by Pobjoy Mint celebrates the Sapphire Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II featuring the Cypher of the monarch. The mintage limit of the coin is 1,952 Issue which is also the Queen’s year of accession.

The Royal Cypher is depicted on gates of the Tower of London, apart from other important locations. The famous design consists of the Queen’s initials. Flowers and plants like The Rose for England, the Daffodil for Wales, the Thistle for Scotland and the Shamrock representing Northern Ireland are also portrayed. The obverse features the high relief Pobjoy effigy of the Queen.

Apart from the Silver coins, 10,000 Unc. Cupro Nickel coins are also being issued for Ascension Island. The coins are struck four times to create a mirror finish.

The Royal Cypher was used for the first time for Commonwealth Realms. The royal initials were used from early Tudor period. It consists of the initial of the Sovereign and the letter R for Rex or Regina. The same Cypher represents the Sovereign in all his or her countries.

Elizabeth II became the Queen when she was 25 years old after her father, King George VI died on 6th February 1952. The coronation happened after the traditional one-year long mourning period observed in remembrance of the King. The ceremony took place at Westminster Abbey where Princess Elizabeth swore an oath to uphold the law and govern the Church of England.

She was named as the longest reigning monarch in 2015. After the death of Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej, she has now become the world’s longest-reigning living monarch.

The coins come in special packaging along with a Certificate of Authenticity.
