Cinema Star Toto on Latest Italian Coins

Antonio de Curtis, popularly known as Toto is a famous Italian actor of the 20th century who combined folk theatre with art movie. He created his own “mask” to present unique melancholic humour and maintained the tradition of the commedia dell’arte.

The obverse features the actor wearing his theatrical “mask”, inspired by a photograph taken by Guy Bourdin/The Guy Bourdin Estate/Courtesy Louise Alexander Gallery. Other inscriptions include the name of the designer “U. PERNAZZA” and “REPUBBLICA ITALIANA”.

On the reverse depicts cinema elements along with the actor’s famous hand gesture. Other inscriptions include “5 EURO”, Totò’s signature, “R” for Mint of Rome, year of Totò’s death “1967” and the year of coin’s issue “2017”.
