Some Series 2013 $100 Notes Found in Circulation

2017-09-18 Mon

There were reports that the Series 2013 $100 notes would be circulated in 2018. But a collector named Ira Zuckerman bought one of them from the APD Currency website on 1st September. The note was listed on the website for $250. It was purchased by a man who worked at a Chase bank in Manhattan. The note belongs to the New York Federal Reserve district and features a serial number MB44713229A. It was the only 2013 note mixed in with a consecutive run of Series 2009 $100 notes and was printed at the BEP’s Western Facility in Fort Worth, Texas in January 2015. Some collectors have also found these notes circulating in the earlier Soviet republic in central Asia. One of these notes bore the serial number MB63093058B and was printed in February 2017.

There was a rumour that no Series 2013 $100 notes were circulated since the first set was printed almost two years ago as they were sent to Iran for the hostage deal in 2016. Series 2013 $100 bills are printed for the New York, Atlanta, and San Francisco districts, along with star notes for the New York and San Francisco banks.

There is no explanation as to why there is so much delay in releasing the Series 2013 notes. Experts believe that this was done to avoid confusion in the marketplace just after the release of the Series 2009 and 2009A $100 Federal Reserve notes. Notes are released as per demand by individual banks. The 2013 bills would not be delivered to commercial banks till the Series 2009 and 2009A notes are all used up.
