Commemorative Coins to Celebrate MGR’s Birth Centenary

India is going to release Rs. 100 and Rs. 5 coins to celebrate the birth centenary of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran. MGR was born on 17th January 1917 and expired on 24th December 1987.The obverse of 100 rupees coin will feature Lion Capital of Ashoka Pillar, the legend Satyamev Jayate [in Hindi], ‘Bharat’ in Devanagari script and ‘INDIA’ in English. The latest rupee symbol and the denominational value ‘100’ in International Numerals will also be depicted.
The reverse will feature a portrait of Ramachandran, his name, and an inscription stating his birth centenary. The numerals ‘1917-2017’ will also be included.
The design of the Rs. 5 coin will also be similar. The 35 grams Rs. 100 coin is made of 50% silver while the Rs. 5 coin will be composed of copper, zinc, and nickel.
