New 5 GEL Banknote Released by Georgia

Georgia released new 5 GEL banknotes into circulation on 1st September. The older issues of banknotes will also be in circulation along with the new ones.The obverse depicts the Iveri Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and a new portrait of Ivane Javakhishvili with better relief and volume. The reverse depicts Niko Pirosmani’s paintings – “Fisherman’s Red Shirt” and “Kahlo” along with the state emblem of Georgia.
Renewed security features include identification marks for the visually impaired. New materials and protective mechanisms have been introduced to increase durability. New GEL 20 and 50 GEL are in circulation since 1st February 2016 and new 100 GEL nominal were introduced on 1st November 2016. New 10 Lari banknotes will be released later.
