The 30g thaler is an innovative silver coin, invented in the late 15th century. Archduke Sigismund of Tirol minted thalers for the first time in 1484. Demand for high-value coins was much more and there were opportunities for minting these coins. The silver mines in Europe were rich. Apart from that, the New World also supplied a lot of silver. After the late 15th century, it was technically possible to mint a coin as big as the thaler.
Rulers in the mid-west of Northern Europe also started to mint thalers using unique designs and iconography. The main trade coins in Europe were then produced in silver rather than gold. Golden trade coins like the gold ducat also existed. Since the late 15th century, the Maria Theresia Thaler became a more popular option.
There are many varieties of thalers, amongst which, those minted in Germany after the late 15th century are popular. Lionthalers from The Netherlands are also popular. The first Lionthaler was minted in Holland in 1575 without Philip II's reference, even though he was still the landlord of The Netherlands. The Lionthaler was widely accepted throughout Europe and especially in the Ottoman Empire.
