Coins of Muhammad Bin Tughluq

Tughluq Dynasty was a Muslim dynasty in India. They were of Turko-Indian origin and ruled over Delhi Sultanate in medieval times. Tughluq dynasty ruled Delhi from 1320 AD till 1414 AD. Their rule started in 1320 AD when Ghazi Malik assumed the throne under the title Ghiyath Al-Din Tughluq. Ghiyath Al Din Tughluq’s son Muhammad Bin Tughluq sat on the throne in the year 1325 AD and ruled it till 1351 AD.

Muhammad Bin Tughluq issued coins in large quantities with a greater number of mints which reflects the extent of his conquests. His coinage is divided into different classes. Coins which were struck in the memory of his father, coins with his own name; coins with his own name which were struck both by normal and token issues, and the coins struck in the names of ‘Abbasid Caliphs’.

Coins which he issued in the memory of his father were issued in gold, silver, and billon. Gold tanka which he issued usually weighed around 11g. But apart from gold tankas, he had issued a gold coin which weighed around 16g, which corresponds to four pagodas.

This gold tanka which he issued in the name of his father weighs around 11g, minted in Hazrat Delhi. The obverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Al-Sultan Al-Ghazi Ghiyath Al-Dunya Wa’l Din Abul Muzaffar’ and the reverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Tughluq Shah Al-Sultan Nasir Amir Al-Mu’minin’ with number 421 within the circle, mint name, and date AH 727 (written in words) around the margin.

This very rare gold tanka was sold for INR 80,000 at Todywalla Auction held in Mumbai on 18th November 2016.
